High up on some of these mountains are the balds: grassy summits where the forest simply stops, and nobody can say for certain why. One old idea is that great herds of elk and bison once grazed them bare and kept them open.
The elk know something about coming home. They vanished from Virginia before the Civil War, and for a long time it seemed the old ways went with them. Then, in 2012, they returned to the far southwest corner of the state. Now, on autumn evenings, you can hear them bugling across the hills again.
Light this one when you’re starting over. It burns like something returning.
